Feed intake & Palatability
ESPN, the occasion to exchange on Facts and think about Future
60 views
A big challenge in today broilers: a huge intake and a short time to digest it. Enhancing as much as possible the digestibility is clearly an objective but we have to deal with the microbiota: how to stimulate the beneficial and reduce the harmful ones.
Prof Birger Svihus, President of European Federation of WPSA, illustrates the key issues of the feed form. He also believes in the young participants of such conferences to stimulate new research.
ESPN 2017
The European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition organized every two years by WPSA is the major scientific event in poultry production.
2017 was truly a success with participants from all over the world.

[Music] hello it's a great pleasure to welcome you burger for at fit channel and I'm really pleased to welcome the president of the european federation of WPS a bell girls lives and i would like because you did a very interesting talk yesterday and i would like you to summarize in a very short time what you said and the main message you want the people to take out of your presentation okay thank you very much well the point I was making yesterday and my talk is that it seems that it seems like that is it is a challenge for the broiler chicken in particular to be able to within the very short time which feed is residing in a small intestinal tract for the digestion absorption to take place it's extremely impressive the capacity of the modern broiler chicken but it seems like data indicate that in some circumstances some birds in a flock will actually fail to maximize their digestibility so undigested material will will will end up in the lower small intestine so it's it's a it's a compromise for the nutritionist because we need to work on digestibility on I would say raising the minimum part outside in the environment or maximizing the digestibility but we need also to deal with the undigestible fraction as a good tool for the animal so what would be your advice for the feed formulator for the nutritionist what they should do on in practice well from a purely from bird perspective and digestibility for the bird perspective obviously we would like to just ability to be as high as possible for that is and the nutrients be converted into products that we sell but then there is the complex interplay between the requirement of the bird and requirement of the microflora or effects on microflora perhaps some components of the diet will be not perhaps where we know that some components that is in the diet will would stimulate beneficial microflora yeah and I guessed is also very high probability that some component will stimulate harmful micro flora proliferation I think that the challenge is that we don't yet understand sufficiently how we stimulate right micro flora and how we avoid so but from the birth perspective obviously maximize digestibility is desired and do you think that the modern bright broiler is more susceptible to the feed foam than before or because for some people I was in a discussion group people say okay we are back 20 years ago or 30 years ago we aren't you are commending coarse particles mass feed maybe and so on do you think that we should go backwards or it's also not a revolution when we talk about mash it's maybe a more a better quality mash well I never believe in going backwards always forward but the bird has changed and what we can use in the diet has change there is now much more awareness of that we should not use some micro flora controlling agents in the in the feed so we have less tools to control harmful micro flora proliferation perhaps and bird is growing faster and faster which also results in a higher and higher demand for feed intake higher pressure on a strain on the digestive system so this is why I say that perhaps under some circumstances maybe we have to consider a diet that is not promoting as high a feed intake as we've had before your course things are changing all the time and we need to change also the feed form and and I think the structure issue it's something that we've become through research more aware of the importance of a certain structure of the diet that wasn't we didn't have a lot of focus on before do you think and it's a good transition do you think that when you introduce these are concerns at the beginning of as the opening ceremony you talk about facts so obviously we have talking about facts but you talked also about the future about the youth population you know how they should help to think beyond largely beyond what we do today and do you are you satisfied today the way the young people dealing with maybe your things we need to do for the future or not or not yet first of all w PSA the world's poultry science association where I'm president of European Federation is doing a great job and and making meeting places where facts can be exchanged and there's a lot of wonderful young people that come in to this to this science of poultry nutrition and poultry science in general and and they have they have a great potential there's always hope in the young isn't there but my my point was that it's also important and and others have raised the same issue that it's important to find unique approach to what type of research is done yeah and that I encouraged young also to remember that we need to always focus on research which increases our understanding after bird biology bird physiology and for example in this issue we're talking about suggestive track development so the point is there's a lot of gold buried there that young people can can unique research do you think today is that the conference you know the ESPN play an active role on that on really you're proposing new area of research for the future hands on yes definitely this is a very good conference and a very stimulating format with the discussion groups and so forth and also the unique mix of research and industry is good as long as we can manage to keep research independent yeah because that's important and I think we do yeah and I think we'd have industry is very it's very it's very aware of the importance of independent research and respected very much and as long as this is the case then then then it is the case then this type of conferences are very very fruitful yeah and as a president of the European Federation of WPC what would be your main observation or your main comment on the conference and you wish for the next one or for the next conference well first of all there is a lot of attendance that is good and my wish for the future is that we we continue to focus on research that is independent and that is focusing on and increasing our understanding of how in nutrition how the digestive tract works how the complex interaction between the feed and the digestive tract is functioning and also as we've talked about the very important role of the microflora yeah thank you very much Rebecca it's a great pleasure to welcome you at the channel thank you [Music]
